Burnhopeside Hall: A New Wedding Venue in Durham

Earlier this summer I had the pleasure of photographing Jo and James’s wedding day at the beautiful Burnhopeside Hall on the outskirts of Durham City. When I first met with the couple I had never heard of this venue, and with good reason – they were the first to hold their reception there for at least 30 years, save for the owner’s family weddings.

The Grade II* listed house dates back to the 18th century and was once the home of William Hedley, who is best known locally for constructing the Puffing Billy locomotive. Set within a beautiful private estate with manicured gardens and stunning views, the estate is the perfect venue for a wedding celebration.

Weddings at Burnhopeside Hall are definitely personal, a mile away from the more corporate venues. The house and grounds are yours to treat as your own for the day, weekend or even week, and with plenty of room for families and friends to stay it becomes your home-from-home!  Any taste or preference that can be accommodated will be and with a limit on the number of events held throughout the year, your wedding is guaranteed to be unique and special to you and your guests. Couples can enjoy exclusive use of the house and grounds, including a camping if you wish in the grounds (festival theme anyone?!) and catering provided using local (and often home grown) produce – perfect for a relaxed family meal the night before and a full breakfast the day after!

A marquee on the lawn with the stunning house as a backdrop would make for the perfect  country garden wedding, and with the beautiful big rooms and open fires, a winter wedding would be so cosy and intimate.

As a photographer, you couldn’t ask for a better venue. The rooms are bright, airy and beautifully renovated, and the grounds have a mixture of backdrops with lots of lovely little nooks to go off for couple shots while the guests enjoy a drinks reception on the picturesque lawns.

The venue only opened its doors to couples this August, but with owner Christine behind the scenes, I’m sure it won’t be long until it is a top destination for weddings in Durham and the North East. However, the number of weddings each year will be strictly limited to retain that ‘Special’ aspect. Couples who are looking for a luxury home-from-home wedding venue for a unique and personal wedding should get in touch for information on how to book or to check my availability.

Fine Art Wedding Albums-Folio Albums

folio_albums_presentation_box_004It was like Christmas had come early this week when I was the lucky recipient of two Folio sample albums. I have been a fan for a while and I am so proud to now be offering these beautifully hand-crafted, UK made albums to all my lovely North East brides and grooms.

For those of you who haven’t heard of them, Folio Albums are a modern UK based company that use the highest quality sustainable paper and environmentally friendly products from local suppliers within the UK. Not only will they help your ‘green’ karma, the quality is superb and they are the most beautiful albums that I’ve seen. The pictures really come alive from the page and the slate grey cotton and jade leather covered albums I chose feel and look absolutely gorgeous.

All albums come in a cardboard presentation box with a complimentary cotton bag to keep your album safe from harm (although I couldn’t resist upgrading to a shabby chic style designer bag for one of my samples). These are really made to last a lifetime and what better way is there to show off your wedding photos!

I am delighted to be offering the full range of Folio Albums; from the large 12″ x 12″ to the parent sized 6″ x 6″ (perfect for bridesmaid/parent/grandparent gifts). So if you are planning your wedding and wondering if a Folio Album is for you, then just get in touch to meet up and have a look through the samples, I would love to show them off!

Canon 7D + Canon 5DmkII = The perfect match!

After much deliberation, I have relegated my well-used (and well-loved) Canon 400D to the position of back-up camera, and bought myself a new Canon 7D to be my second camera alongside the awesome 5DmkII. I have heard and read many good things about this pairing; the combination of cropped sensor, faster focusing and wireless flash control of the 7D seems to compliment the full frame, higher ISO output of the 5DmkII, and after having them both for 24 hours, I can safely say that I am hooked!

Canon 7D and 5DmkII

The 7D is an amazing camera, and feels so much chunkier than the 5DmkII, with so many different features. In particular I can see myself using the different focusing modes and the super-fast shutter speed-absolutely made to take confetti throwing shots! Another great feature, that is a big factor for wedding photography, is just how quiet the shutter is, perfect for the more solemn moments in the wedding ceremony.

I can’t wait to put these two through their paces soon with some upcoming wedding and engagement photography shoots!

Walking with Frankie

Not a wedding this time, but instead, after a very busy few months, I have been able to get out and about with the camera more. I thought I would share some of my favourite shots of a more unusual model for me – my dog Frankie!

She is pretty unresponsive to my directions but I managed to get some nice shots around the fields of Sunderland Bridge and the banks of the River Wear near Durham City.

It was also a great excuse to play with the shutter speed settings on the camera to capture her at top speed (which is pretty fast, especially when she is heading straight for me!), rather than the soft-focus portrait settings more typical of wedding photography.

Although, I do love a soft-focus portrait taken with my 85/1.8 to give this. Frankie’s focus was on a stick in my other hand!

It’s back to weddings for me next week, so more on that to follow!
